General Notes: Husband - Michael Thomas MAGERS
Growing up on a farm in Old Fort gave Mike a work ethic that carried him through life. He liked the night shift on the plow, disc and everything else the old Ford tractors would pull. Mike told us about falling asleep and being awakened as the tractor hit the railroad fence at the end of the field. Sometimes he would wait for everyone else to be asleep, park the tractor a safe distance from the house and go to nearby Tiffin and cruise the strip. He enjoyed doing repairs on the old Allis Chalmers model 60 combine, replacing the belts over and over.
Mike excelled in school, with track and basketball being his best subjects. He was very fast and went to the state finals in Columbus in 1966, his senior year, finishing first place in the 180-yard low hurdles and seventh in the 110-yard high hurdles.
After graduation from Old Fort High School, Mike attended Bowling Green State University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, attended boot camp, Advanced Individual Training and was off to Vietnam, Co C, 2nd Btn, 7th Cavalry, 1st Air Cav Div APG 3F. He wrote a letter to his mother stating he had survived being point man longer than anyone before him. This was not comforting for his mother.
The opportunity for sniper school came and Mike was glad to be out of the jungle. He and a fellow sniper were hit by friendly fire from an American helicopter firing 200 rounds at the two snipers one afternoon. His partner lost both legs, while Mike was hit six times; he lost his right thumb, four hits to the right leg leaving his femur pulverized and once in the left knee. Two other snipers lost their lives that day.
Mike went into sales and set the world on fire, his own words. He and Connie, his wife, started Advanced Labeling, manufacturing products associated with shipping.
Despite his serious wounds in Vietnam, Mike played basketball and softball until it was too painful. Golf, raising two sons, fast cars, convertibles, and especially, fast convertibles, filled his spare time. He was an avid sports fan who never missed the chance to watch at the game or on TV. Mike also enjoyed his condo near Fort Myers, Florida.
Mike loved life. He always had a smile with a greeting even in those final days. Vietnam chased Mike all his adult life. After his bullet wounds, he wore a body cast for nearly a year. Slower than some in basketball and softball, he never gave up on the pursuit of his opponent. Then his Agent Orange exposure led to ALS and it was three long punishing years before he no longer could fight. Never once in his life did Mike ever play the part of a victim.
